Cyclospora and Isospora Examination

Clinical Significance: Cyclospora cayetanensis and Isospora belli are coccidian parasites which cause malaise, low grade fever, and diarrhea. Fatigue, anorexia, vomiting, myalgia and weight loss occur. The clinical presentation for those patients infected with either disease is similar. Consuming food or water containing the parasite can lead to infection.

PLEASE NOTE: Stools specimens submitted under Test Code 681 Ova and Parasite Examination, will provide a presumptive result for Cyclospora if detected. If a presumptive result is returned and confirmatory test is desired, providers must submit an add-on order for Test Code 10018 within 3 days of the initial report to secure a definitive diagnosis from the existing specimen.
Supply: #F01 Total-Fix® Transport Vial
Patient Preparation: Preserved stool must not contain residual barium from diagnostic tests.
Preferred Specimen: 10 grams or 10 mL fresh stool preserved in 1 single Total-Fix® transport vial or 10% formalin transport vial
Minimum Volume: 5 grams or 5 mL
Collection Instructions: Transfer stool within 30 minutes of collection into suitable vial. Fill to the line on the transport vial.
Transport container: Total-Fix transport vial or 10% formalin transport vial
Transport temperature: Room temperature
- Room temperature: 30 days
- Refrigerated: Unacceptable
- Frozen: Unacceptable
Reject criteria:
- Unpreserved stool
- Stool specimens preserved in transport media not listed as acceptable
