National HIV Testing Day - Breaking the Stigma

June 27 is annually recognized as National HIV Testing Day in the United States. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing your HIV status. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends that everyone ages 13-64 get tested.

Why should you care?

Despite what you may have heard, anyone can get HIV. While certain populations are more seriously affected, men and women of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are at risk. Major public health agencies, such as the CDC and the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), advocate for routine HIV screening for all individuals ages 13-65.

Why test everyone?

Despite great advances in the treatment of HIV, the rate of infection isn't decreasing in the U.S., indicating that current screening protocols may not be effective. The CDC and other authorities believe that universal screening—testing all people ages 13-65—could lead to earlier detection and a reduction in the spread of the virus.

So today, let's make HIV screening everyone's business. Do you know your status? You might be surprised to learn who is at risk. Approximately 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and alarmingly, nearly one in six—about 16 percent—are unaware of their infection.

Symptoms of HIV can often mimic those of other common illnesses, making it easy to mistake them for something else. Don't wait! Get tested through DLO and take charge of your health. Early detection can make a world of difference.

Let’s break the stigma and promote awareness together!
